Researched for Detroit's citywide 300th birthday celebration in correlation with a 2001 exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum, this book tells the story of Belle Isle's immutable place in Detroit's history. The author, Janet Anderson, is a lifelong Detroit resident, third generation eastsider, and a professed urbanist. Her grandfather was the first Curator of the Belle Isle Zoo, and her mother, aunt, and uncle have all been active in the Friends of Belle Isle, one of the Belle Isle Conservancy's legacy organizations.
